Damien Rice
_Damien Rice (born 7 December 1973) is an Irish singer/songwriter and musician. As a musician he plays the guitar, cello, violin, piano and drums.

Rice began his musical career as a member of the 90’s rock group Juniper, releasing two singles with the band, however due to increasing interference from their record label Polygram he decided to leave the band and pursue  a solo career.

Striking out on his own Rice spent time living as a farmer in Tuscany and later busked his way around Europe before returning to Ireland.

After getting into contact with his second cousin, music producer David Arnold, Rice sent him a demo of his work, which impressed Arnold enough that he bought him a mobile recording studio so he could record his debut. After collaborating with several artists throughout Ireland and England Rice released his debut O on the 1st of February 2002, which peaked at #8 on the UK albums chart and went on to win the Shortlist music prize. O also produced two top 30 singles, “Cannonball” and “Volcano”.

Rice released his second album 9 in 2006. The Irish Times placed Rice at number thirty four in a list of “The Best 50 Irish Acts Right Now” in April 2009, referring to him as “the quiet one, the intense one, the singer-songwriter most revered by the other quiet and intense ones” and as “a most excruciatingly honest songwriter.”

Jolie Holland grew up in Texas, where from a young age she experimented with writing, playing, and singing music. By her teens she had learned piano, guitar, and  fiddle, and was performing as a traveling musician.

San Francisco was her home for a time in the mid-'90s before Holland was on her horse again, ambling to Vancouver and founding the neo-traditionalist folk outfit Be Good Tanyas. She contributed to the Tanyas' Blue Horse LP.

She has released five albums the latest being Pint of Blood. I recommend listening to her first two releases called Escondida and Catalpa. It's the perfect introduction to an incredible artist.

Hey Rosetta! hails from the rocky and cold northeastern province of Newfoundland, Canada. In 2005, frontman Tim Baker arrived home from a road trip with a suitcase full of poems and melodies.

Hey Rosetta! was formed soon after with the addition of a string section (cellist Romesh Thavanathan and violinist Kinley Dowling) and rhythm section (bassist Josh Ward, drummer Phil Maloney, and guitarist Adam Hogan).

Since then, they’ve blossomed into a powerful group whose explosive live shows have earned them a devoted following.

This song called Epitaph got my attention. Any acoustic guitar fan will love this song. Simplistic with powerful vocals. Love it!

Chris Pureka is an American acoustic singer-songwriter from Northampton, Massachusetts. I discovered her while searching for artists similar to the Be Good Tanyas. I'll go into more details about my music searching techniques in my next blog post but a great website to start with is

Lucinda Williams (born January 26, 1953) is an American rock, folk, and alt-country songwriter and singer.

A three-time Grammy Award winner, she was named “America’s best songwriter” by  TIME magazine in 2002.

The first thing that came to my mind when I first listened to he music is that she reminds me of Cheryl Crows sexy aunt. More mature, provocative and edgy. Her music has a raw feel to it.....unpolished yet unspoiled

Check out this live version of Essence below. Not many artists can sound this good live.

For some she has attained cult status. Go to The Mygrooves page and search for the songs Righteously and Druken Angel to find out why.

The National is a Brooklyn-based alternative rock band formed in 1999, by friends from Cincinnati, Ohio. The band’s lyrics are written and sung by Matt Berninger.
The rest of the band is composed of two pairs of brothers:
Aaron Dessner (guitar, bass, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).
They have five albums starting with their self titled debut album, followed by Sad songs for dirty lovers, the crtitically acclaimed Boxer, Alligator and the latest release High Violet.

The deep baritone of Matt Berninger compels you to listen but the ability to create a unique and intoxicating sound is what sets this band apart.

This song started the obsession!

The be good Tanyas are a folk, country, bluegrass band hailing from Vancouver BC. One of the founding members was Jolie Holland who went on to have a solo career of her own. Both are amazing artists that inspired me to learn to play the banjo. A little more Canadian talent for you.
Check out the clip below. If you like Grooveshark it.

Here's the first band of many to come. Great name and they have an original sound. Love the vocals and interesting writing as well.
